I’d like to tell you a short speech presented by Frank William Abagnale, at the New Rochelle Rotary club in New York, 1963. This speech and speaker is so famous that some of you must have heard it.
Two little mice fell in a bucket of cream. The first mouse quickly gave up and drowned. The second mouse wouldn't quit. He struggled so hard that eventually he churned that cream into butter and crawled out, (escaped and survived). Gentleman, as of this moment, I am that second mouse.
I like this speech very much and wanted to use it for today’s speech. But I didn’t have the script.
So I went to Tsutaya, but they didn’t have it.
I asked a staff person to bring it from somewhere, so called “otoriyose”, but many days passed without it.
I became afraid that I didn’t have enough time to prepare for my speech.
So I ordered it in Amazon.
Next day I got it, and also got a telephone call from Tsutaya.
“Sawane san, we’ve got your DVD, come and take it”
At last I got the same two DVDs, “Catch me if you can”, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Tom Hanks, and Christopher Walken.
This speech was made by Christopher Walken.
Now, I’m sure that this speech was based on a real experiment.
In 1957, Curt Richter, a researcher at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, conducted an experiment.
He placed dozens of rats into glass jars and then filled the jars with water, not cream. He then measured how long the rats swam before they drowned. Surprisingly, he found two kinds of rats. The first group quickly gave up and drowned. The second group continued swimming for 60 hours. If the jars had been filled with not water but cream, they could have survived.
I don’t know which group I belong to in fact, but as of this moment, I’d like to swim for sixty hours with you, fellow toastmasters.
